Go into Ridley-Tree Gallery between now and mid-February and, at the entrance to the new display space for prints and drawings, you’ll be greeted by this imposing, white-moustached gentleman in a velvet smoking jacket. Who is he, and who is the artist who so skillfully captured his likeness and personality? The subject of the portrait is the writer and art critic Edmond de Goncourt (1822-1896), known both for the novels he wrote with his brother Jules and for his writings promoting the appreciation of Japanese and French Rococo art – look carefully and you’ll see examples of both displayed in his study.… read more
